Like other producers we work with, Alpha Domus is a family story going back several decades that has grown to embody fine wines expressing a single site. Planted to vine after the land was acquired in 1989, the winery has become a beacon within the Bridge Pa Triangle Wine District, a subregion of Hawke’s Bay.

Alpha Domus is family owned and operated, with long time winemaker Barry Riwai and vineyard manager Darren Chatterton together managing a certified organic vineyard where no synthetic chemical fertilisers, pesticides, or herbicides are used. There are both heritage vines and new clones planted.

Wines span from Methode Traditionelle Chardonnay-based sparkling through medium-bodied reds including Cabernet Franc and Syrah. They also produce a fun, low alcohol canned sparkling rosé called Beatrix, the namesake of the winery’s third-generation winemaker and daughter.

The name Alpha Domus was derived from the first initials of the founders names in age descending order. Anthonius, Leonarda, Paulus, Henrikus and Anthonius. Domus is Latin for home.
