Adelina
Clare Valley, South Australia
Adelina is the husband and wife team of Colin McBryde and Jen Gardner. Humble, talented humans doing good things by nature. It’s one of Australia’s most compelling small estates, farming vines that date back to 1915. More recently, they took home the prestigious award of 2023 Young Gun of Wine Vineyard of the Year.
Adelina’s estate wines come from their organic-certified vineyard, while other bottlings are drawn from the top sites of friends with a similar farming philosophy. Both Jen and Colin have PhD’s in oenological related fields and working histories in wine spanning the past 30 years.
The Estate vineyard sits at 450 meters between the Spring Farm hills—old Shiraz & Grenache, some Cabernet and Pedro Ximénez. Everything’s farmed organically now, but Col will tell you it wasn’t always that way. Around 2008 they had an epiphany: “We put the cart before the horse.” The more work in the vineyard, the better the wine. Revolutionary stuff, right?
Col’s refreshingly blunt about the whole thing—keeps talking about “continual self-doubt” being their secret weapon. No glamorized Instagram stories here, just the truth: some days are brilliant, some days aren’t, and the reward comes in the bottle.
